Winston Peters: Self reliance needed for economic restart

Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters believes the country is rediscovering its resilience and self-reliance through its response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He says he is heartened that the mass majority of New Zealanders are following lockdown rules and that the government looking at the future, including paying to keep much of the workforce intact.

The New Zealand First leader says he doesn't want a repeat of the Rogernomics experience when large numbers of people and particularly Māori workers were thrown on the scrapheap.

"Unlike that circumstance of blind ideology, at least we are coming back here with a full script of how we are going to take everyone with us and ensure we deal as much as we possibly can with the economic shutdown as quickly as we possibly can. Now that will take some serious foresight and agreement and a lot of goodwill from a lot of people but we can do it and we will have, I am convinced, a better country with its priorities on what we can do better, being more self-reliant than we have been in past times for the last 50 years," he says.

Totally agree. We took reliance off the UK in 1973 thanks to the EU. We placed our focus on China and then we have GFC and now Covid19. We need to focus on our own country first. NZ First.
