As part of Minister Jones’ central north island PGF tour, he made it to Reporoa for a waste to energy announcement. He announced $7 million to support construction of a waste to energy plant that produces biogas.
The success of this initiative could see similar facilities supported across regional New Zealand. The Reporoa plant will transform 20,000 tonnes of organic food waste from local food manufacturers and convert it to biogas. This creates much needed sustainable energy, and could make use of the 327,000 tonnes of food waste that goes to landfills each year in New Zealand.
