Jenny Marcroft, New Zealand First Spokesperson for Health
Today, public consultation on the Government's proposals for medicinal cannabis regulations opened, covering the proposed regulations and standards for medicinal cannabis, from cultivation to quality standards. The regulatory framework developed will support the Misuse of Drugs (Medicinal Cannabis) Amendment, passed in December last year. The Act broadens the legality of cannabis for medicinal purposes.
While the Government establishes the medicinal cannabis scheme, New Zealand First ensured that those found in possession of cannabis or cannabis utensils without approval before the new law and regulations take effect and are in palliation (have an advanced, progressive life limiting condition) will have a legal defense to avoid criminal conviction.
New Zealand First Spokesperson for Health, Jenny Marcroft, has worked closely with the Minister of Health, Hon David Clark, to ensure a compassionate approach to those for whom the use of medicinal cannabis reduces their suffering.
Now, with public input, the Government is deciding how the future medicinal cannabis regime will function. Consultation closes Wednesday 7 August.
