The Coalition Government has announced that a further $500,000 will be given to help residents in Southland and Otago to speed up recovery efforts from the floods.
It follows prior government assistance of $200,000 earlier this month where the Southland Mayoral Relief Fund received $100,000 to support communities impacted by the flooding and the Rural Support Trust received $100,000 to help growers and farmers recover.
The added funding will employ jobseekers to clear debris, trees, and the general clean-up efforts. It will also be used for the cost of hiring or buying the equipment, clothing, and paying for transport costs needed for the clean-up.
About 700 farms in Southland and 50 farms in Otago have been contacted to see if immediate help was needed. There was currently about 60 farms still needing help with clean-up but the number was expected to increase.
