Time To Investigate Reinstating Wellington-Lyttelton Ferry
A serious investigation by the government into the viability of reinstating a car, freight and passenger ferry between Wellington and Lyttelton has to be undertaken, says New Zealand First Transport Spokesperson Denis O’Rourke.
“The shortcomings of using State Highway 7 and the Lewis Pass as an alternate route for quake damaged SH1 between Picton and Christchurch will become more apparent this winter with snow chains banned on the route.
“Snow storms often occur in the area that make it likely the route would be closed completely at such times thereby severely disrupting the flow of freight and travellers.
“Now is the time to consider whether a permanent Wellington-Lyttelton ferry service that would continue after the re-opening of SH1, is cost effective,” says Mr O’Rourke.
