INTRODUCTION TO NEW ZEALAND FIRST POLICIES
NEW ZEALAND FIRST
BACKGROUND
New Zealand First was formed on 18 July 1993 as a political party to represent the views of all New Zealanders concerned about the economic and social direction of New Zealand, the sale of public assets to foreign control, and the decline in employment and social services. New Zealand First fielded 83 candidates in the 1993 election, and by 1996 had 17 Members of Parliament and was in Government. The party continues to represent tens of thousands of New Zealanders wanting progressive policies and commonsense decision-making in the best interests of all New Zealanders.
OUR VISION
To put New Zealand and New Zealanders first through enlightened economic and social policies, by placing control of New Zealand's resources in the hands of New Zealanders, and by restoring faith in the democratic process.
FIFTEEN FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES FOR SOUND GOVERNMENT
New Zealand First was formed with 15 fundamental principles >>
PLANNING FOR AN ENHANCED FUTURE
New Zealand First believes that:
- New Zealanders are entitled to a political system they can feel confident about, and politicians they can rely on to represent them;
- New Zealand needs a clear strategy to boost export growth and real wages. New Zealand First will implement a plan to treble exports by 2020, and build a positive future based on sound economic growth. Any person capable of work should be given the opportunity to do so and to receive 'first world' wages and salaries;
- There should be an end to the aimless restructuring of government services, a removal of unnecessary rules and regulations based on misguided political correctness, and a return to a public service ethic within the bureaucracy. Spending will be directed to the provision of high quality education and health professionals, to improving free access to improved public education and health services, and to developing a life style that values our people, our environment, and that recognises our uniqueness;
- The key to New Zealand's future prosperity lies in the secure ownership, co-ordinated rebuilding and innovative development of its infrastructure. Clogged roads, run-down rail, insecure power supply and lack of planning focus cannot be allowed to continue. New Zealand First will protect New Zealand ownership and preserve the 'Kiwi' lifestyle;
- Our senior citizens are the foundation on which our communities are built. New Zealand First will ensure that our seniors enjoy secure retirement income and access to health and other services, whilst empowering them to retain their valued community involvement and maintain their independence.
- It is time to mount a war against lawlessness by doubling our police force and providing adequate powers, implementing realistic sentencing, instilling discipline in our young people, taking a very tough line on youth and recidivist offending, and aggressively targeting 'entry level' crime by those seeking to enter the crime industry;
- While we are many peoples with different customs, languages, religions and cultures we are one country, we are all New Zealanders first. A focus for New Zealand First during the next parliamentary term will be the pursuit of policies that promote social cohesion and allow New Zealanders to be once again proud of their race relations. We will put an end to the Treaty of Waitangi grievance industry, and remove platitudinous statements about the Treaty and so-called principles from our legislation; and,
- Ad hoc policy-making on immigration must cease. Immigration will no longer be used as an excuse for our failure to train, skill, and employ our own people. We will not tolerate New Zealand being a haven for queue-jumping asylum seekers. Refugees will be accepted only from those who can contribute to a better way of life for all New Zealanders. New Zealand First policies will reflect the high value we place on our citizenship.
2005 Policy -Towards 2020
New Zealand First is providing a clear outline of the party's key plans.This is an ongoing process.Further policies will be added as they are released.
