COMMON SENSE SOLUTIONS

In my portfolio areas of Primary Production and Environment, I am of the view that New Zealand First should reinforce the importance of the former but not to the detriment of the latter.

Interestingly, most farmers would consider themselves to be environmentalists. But many environmentalists who are not also farmers would disagree.

Our aim for this year is to talk in positive terms on both issues so that better understanding and positive outcomes are the result. I have always personally believed that a centre party such as New Zealand First is ideally placed to bring about common sense solutions where previously only the extreme views of the left and right have been heard.

Highly efficient and productive farming need not be at the expense of our environment and with modern and emerging practices it will not be. In my short lifetime the understanding and acceptance of the critical interface between the two seemingly opposing essentials of commercial farming and environmental good practice have advanced dramatically.
