A Message from the President

A prosperous and happy New Year to all members.

It was a great honour for me to be elected the President of New Zealand First at our annual general meeting. Board meetings are under way and we have appointed Board member Brent Catchpole as Treasurer to fill that vacancy. Our Secretary Margaret Green has retired after many years of tremendous service and we will shortly be appointing a replacement secretary. The Board has the opportunity to co-opt two members and steps are underway to give effect to this opportunity.

The Board is a voluntary organisation. Everyone, including the President, is a volunteer.

Whilst the management of the party is the Board’s key function, I believe that as much as possible, Board members should try to be involved in at least one particular policy issue and to liaise with the Member of Parliament concerned with that issue. Further, I believe Board members should try and keep in touch with local issues and keep the Board and the Parliamentary Office informed of such issues. For example, with a Waitakere Ranges Bill recently before Parliament, as a Local Bill, I dropped a line to all Members of Parliament about the matter. I expect Board members to do more than just be at the end of a telephone once a month for a Board meeting. For myself, I have already assisted with the formation of the new Auckland office, the completion of matters relating to the Electoral Commission (in my current capacity as acting Secretary) and also with MP’s Electoral returns. This is in addition to other matters.

I would like to have a list of members who have particular knowledge about special issues. If you are highly knowledgeable about, for example, transport, health, education or other issues, please drop me a note so that when legislation is brought before Parliament your views on these issues can be sought.

Charles Sturt, as Vice President, is looking after the preparations for the AGM this year, scheduled for 14-15 October. I am fully aware of the matters arising from the last election, having been in the middle of it myself. The election result will inevitably bring about changes in our administration, which will be considered by the Board.

All of us on the Board look forward to your views and suggestions, which I always consider are positive because we must look at all our resources and realise that there are things which can be improved to make ourselves more efficient. So all your cards, letters and emails are most welcome. I look forward to visiting Electorates in April when I will have free time. Please contact me with suggestions for meetings. At these meetings I want your views so that they can be conveyed to the board and acted upon in the best interests of the future of New Zealand First and our country. I look forward to meeting you in your Electorates.
