Joint Trans-Tasman Therapeutic Goods Agency

The Australian Government’s agreement to delay implementing a proposed Joint Therapeutic Goods Agency highlights the Health Minister’s incompetent handling of this issue.

This is not only embarrassing internationally but highlights the duplicitous process the Government undertook over this issue by ignoring a select committee inquiry into the proposed agency and the groundswell of public opinion opposed to the idea.

We now have a situation which sees all other political parties, except the Government, opposing the scheme and huge uncertainty within the affected industries as to what is going to happen. The over-arching question of a lack of quality control within New Zealand industries is also left unanswered.

The process is a mess and the Treaty should never have been signed.
