Drinking Age Review

The Government looks set to continue on its destructive social policy agenda by ignoring repeated calls from New Zealand First to review the drinking age as a matter of urgency. The social ramifications of lowering the drinking age have been repeatedly overlooked as a serious issue facing young New Zealanders.

Overseas experience has indicated that when the drinking age comes down, the number of youths involved in car crashes increases. Unfortunately, this has been the New Zealand experience as well. In 1999, prior to the law change, 585 under-age drinking infringements were issued as compared to 3,036 last year. This is a five fold increase that the Government cannot afford to ignore any longer.

New Zealand First would like to see the legal age for drinking return to 20 immediately.
