Leader's LetterJuly 2001Doug Woolerton: The PresidentOur second batch of monthly renewal forms have been posted to members, and to date, the reaction to this new system has been very positive with our members pleased to receive the notices. Please remember that only those members whose subscription falls due will be getting this mail. For example a member who joined up in June of last year will get a renewal form this June and so on. Several suggestions to improve the form and the process have been made, and these have been incorporated for the future. I must stress, anything mailed out centrally is complimentary to the work the committees are doing in their electorate. Three electorates have raised concerns about the process and all three are electorates where the committee has been diligent in renewing their own membership over the years. The Board of New Zealand First has three separate committees working to ensure that everything comes together as it should at our 2001 convention. Firstly, there is the convention to organise. Secondly, the Board has to have in place the detail of the administrative restructuring outlined to delegates at our last convention in Hamilton. Thirdly, a party strategy which clearly outlines the pathway to electoral success at the next convention. These matters along with day today issues have kept the Board busy. I’m sure members and delegates will be very satisfied when we are presented with the fruits of their labours. On a more political note it is very worthwhile for members to keep an ear to the radio talk back and please, phone in when we are misrepresented or outrageous statements are made against New Zealand First. Often talk back hosts will give credit to the National Party for our policy of free health care for under six’s, or abolishing the superannuation surtax to name but two. A recent blatant example was when Labour finally made some compensation to our World War II soldiers and Vietnam vets. Rodney Hide took some credit for raising the issue. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact National, supported by ACT, cancelled compensation Winston Peters had budgeted for while he was Treasurer. Rodney was just being blatantly opportunistic, although we put out press releases they are often not printed. However if you can take the time to phone talk back and put them right it will be a huge help. Word of mouth is not to be underestimated. Like wise with those of you who travel in cyberspace. Please type in a few words for us on the Internet. If you are unsure of the facts, phone Wellington and they will soon put you on the right track with regard to where we stand on issues.
