Leader's LetterDecember 2007
Convention 2007A well-attended and highly successful convention was held in Taupo over the weekend of 27-28 October. Under the theme of Uniquely Kiwi a stimulating programme lifted the spirits of delegates and provided a variety of opportunities for discussion of policy and direction. The Great Lake Centre proved to be an excellent venue and the support from party members in this 'middle year' of the electoral cycle was excellent. The convention was opened by the newly elected Mayor of Taupo, Rick Cooper and also received an erudite and challenging address by Dr Jon Johansson which examined the opportunities and challenges for New Zealand First in 2008. A new party secretary, (Anne Martin) was elected and Jens Meder and Edwin Perry were elected to the Board. Dail Jones, George Groombridge, and Brent Catchpole continue in their positions of President, Vice President, and Treasurer respectively. The reports of the President and Treasurer were well received. Delegates had the opportunity to consider a very large number of policy and floor remits and those recommendations will be considered as policies are reviewed and updated. The convention also greatly appreciated the outstanding contributions of the party's Members of Parliament who outlined a long list of achievements and gave a valuable insight into the workings of Parliament and the select committee process as well as providing a vision for the future. The large number of attendees were stirred and challenged by the leader's address "Uniquely Kiwi - An Endangered Species". Winston Peters' ability to identify important issues and to clearly articulate the party's principles, policies and solutions received rousing acclamation. The opportunity for delegates from throughout the country to get together, enjoy each others company in both social and business settings and to participate in a thoroughly professional event was an uplifting experience. We look forward to celebrating the party's 15th birthday at next year's convention - and hope that you can join us! Start planning now for Auckland in July 2008.
