A Personal Thank You to Doug, Kay And George

While the nature of politics sees people come and go in various roles, we must always as a party take the time to thank those who have delivered outstanding service to New Zealand First.

A Personal Thank You to Doug, Kay And George.

Doug Woolerton is a rare man in New Zealand politics. He was an integral part of taking New Zealand First, which started as a good idea and quickly became a fully-fledged political movement into government in just over three years from its formation. Doug was New Zealand First’s inaugural president in 1993 and served with distinction for the next 12 years. He is one of the longest serving party presidents, from any party, in our political history.

He shared the vision of a third alternative to the two old parties and he was prepared to put in the time and effort required to build such a party. No political party can succeed, as New Zealand First has, without the tireless work of party officials at all levels, and Doug has overseen this work with commendable skill and dedication. This was an important step for New Zealand, a third voice that would stop asset sales, protect our borders and be a voice for those who had been neglected by the two old parties.

It is safe to say that without him, it is doubtful we would have been as successful as we have been in the past. We must also acknowledge the support that Bev has provided Doug with. It is not easy being the support person in politics and Bev has done this with aplomb.

A Personal Thank You to Doug, Kay And George

I want to personally thank him for everything he has done.

Kay Urlich has also been with us from the beginning as our Treasurer. It is no coincidence that she leaves this role with our finances in healthy shape, which reinforces the valuable work she has invested in the party.

Kay has spent many thousands of hours over the years working to ensure that the party had the finances it needed to be successful, but without being financially irresponsible.

This is not an easy task, and there is no limelight or adulation associated with this role in the party.

But she has done this most ably for many years now and we all owe her a lot.

George Groombridge has served New Zealand First in a variety of roles over many years, most recently as party Vice-President. He has given many long hours to our cause having combined electorate work with that of the wider party.

He has made valuable contribution as Vice-President and his institutional knowledge of New Zealand First and what we stand for is invaluable.

Thank you George.
