Leader's LetterOctober 2004
It’s Convention Time AgainHow time flies! It doesn’t seem all that long since last year’s convention, now this year’s is almost upon us. What happened in the intervening time? The answer to that question is quite a lot and even more will happen between this convention and the next. It is election year next year and some will see that convention as one of significance. It will be of course, all of them are, but in many respects the convention a year out from an election is even more important. This is for a number of reasons. Firstly, there is the time it provides for our policy team to fully analyse and cost remits. This is not always possible with election year conventions. Indeed, sometimes if the election is called early, the convention occurs after! Secondly, it allows for the mid term convention to be used as an “advisory and motivational” convention. We can all go away not only feeling inspired but also with the knowledge we are part of a large team working to a specified plan. The details of the plan may not be known, or even completed, but the outline can be clearly indicated. In the forthcoming months the gaps will be filled, candidates announced, policy finalised and the action will begin. All of us will be marching to the same drumbeat! Nobody should be in any doubt there are many problems facing this country, physical, economic and social. The issues range from infrastructural, like roading and electricity to social concerns like superannuation, health and education. There are moral issues emerging, which are of concern and of course there are the three areas we raised at the last election, namely, immigration, law and order and the Treaty grievance industry. All in all, there is much to be done in the year immediately prior to an election and a convention is an excellent place to start. So I hope to see you in Taupo. We need you. Peter Brown MP
