List Member of Parliament

Major Portfolios: Economic Development, Primary Production, Agriculture, Forestry, Rural Affairs, Land Information, Environment, and Conservation

Select Committee: Finance and Expenditure

Doug is a list Member of Parliament, having been elected in 1996. He, along with the Rt Hon Winston Peters, is a founder member of the New Zealand First Party. Doug was New Zealand First's inaugural president in 1993 and served with distinction for the next 12 years. He is one of the longest serving party presidents, from any party, in our political history.

Doug's career in the Dairy Farming Industry began when he first left school. By the age of 21 he had purchased his first farm.

Doug was elected to the Board of the Waikato Milk Co. twelve years later and became Deputy Chairman shortly after that. His time as a Director and Deputy Chairman spanned nine years. This provided Doug with first hand knowledge of an industry that is world class and today provides 25% of New Zealand's Exports.

Although no longer farming, Doug retains a close interest in farming matters in general and the Dairy Industry in particular.

For relaxation Doug enjoys a small home garden and delights in motoring throughout New Zealand. He and his wife Bev prefer road trips in this country rather than overseas travel.

Doug was born in Hamilton in 1944 and was educated at Hamilton Boys High. He and Bev have three adult children and three grandchildren.
