Disappointing Invercargill Not Consulted On Refugees

04 May 2017

New Zealand First is disappointed in the lack of consultation by the National  government over the new refugee settlement in Invercargill.

“The government must work more inclusively with local bodies when it’s making such decisions,” says Ria Bond, NZ First List MP based in Invercargill.

“Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadbolt’s concerns about employment opportunities and whether we have enough housing are valid.

“We want refugees to be successful in our communities. They should not be set up to fail.

“The decision reached by Immigration NZ and the government would have taken months to decide, so it’s neglectful and arrogant of this government to not communicate with local councils,” says Ms Bond.
